Set up OpenPrefs in other MCP apps
Your agent can likely help you here: ask it to connect to mcp.openprefs.ai.
Any app that supports MCP can use OpenPrefs. How you connect depends on whether the app can sign in to a connector.
Apps that sign in to a connector
Add OpenPrefs as a custom connector, also called a remote MCP server, with this address. The app sends you to OpenPrefs to approve it and choose what it can use; no token needed.
Apps with an MCP config file
An app that can’t sign in, such as one configured with a JSON file, uses a token. In OpenPrefs, open Agents, select Connect an agent, then Create new token, name it after the app and choose what it can use. The token dialog shows a config to copy, with your token filled in, like this one:
Some apps name the address serverUrl instead of url; check the app’s MCP instructions. The token is shown only once, so copy it before you close the dialog, and treat it like a password.
Agents that prefer a REST API
Scripts and agents can use the same tools over a REST API, with a token. Give your agent the API’s description, which tells it everything it needs:
Try it
Ask the app something that needs your preferences, or tell it something worth keeping:
- “What do my OpenPrefs say about where I like to eat?”
- “Save to OpenPrefs that I like Italian food and prefer dinner after 6pm.”
Every read and change shows on your Activity page, and you can undo any change. To change what the app can use, or disconnect it, open the Agents page.
