OpenPrefs

Set up OpenPrefs in Claude Code

Claude Code connects to OpenPrefs with a token you create for it, added with one command.

Steps

  1. Create a free OpenPrefs account at openprefs.ai/signup, or sign in if you have one.
  2. Create a token. In OpenPrefs, open Agents, select Connect an agent, then Create new token. Name it Claude Code, so you can tell what it did in Activity.
  3. Choose what it can use. Pick the spaces Claude Code can use, and whether it can only read them or also make changes, then create the token.
  4. Copy the token. It’s shown only once.
  5. Add OpenPrefs to Claude Code. Run this in your terminal, with your token in place of YOUR_TOKEN. The token dialog in OpenPrefs also shows this command with your token filled in.
claude mcp add --transport http openprefs https://mcp.openprefs.ai --header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_TOKEN"
  6. Start Claude Code and run /mcp to check that OpenPrefs is connected.

Keep the token safe

The token lets Claude Code use your preferences, so treat it like a password and give it only to Claude Code. If it gets out, open Claude Code on the Agents page and create a new token, which replaces the old one, or disconnect it.

Try it

Ask Claude Code something that needs your preferences, or tell it something worth keeping:

  • “What do my OpenPrefs say about where I like to eat?”
  • “Save to OpenPrefs that I like Italian food and prefer dinner after 6pm.”

Every read and change shows on your Activity page, and you can undo any change. To change what Claude Code can use, or disconnect it, open the Agents page.
